Gender, Work and Organization conference – Call for stream and collaborative events proposals

Stellenbosch Business School has achieved a major first for Africa by winning the bid to host the 2023 Gender Work & Organization (GWO) Conference. The 13th international interdisciplinary conference will be held on 28 – 30 June 2023 with the theme Marginalized gender identities - how can intellectual activism transform work and organization? The GWO conference is an offshoot of a journal by the same name. The journal fills a niche in global academic discourse, publishing research at the nexus of women, gender, and feminism in the workplace, holding a 3,465 impact factor (2020).

The 3-day conference provides an international forum for debate and analysis of contemporary issues affecting gender studies at work, in organizing work, and in jobs. In 2021, the conference at Kent University, United Kingdom, attracted more than 600 international scholars from over 30 nations. The 2022 conference was recently hosted in Bogota, Columbia.

GWO2023 South Africa will be primarily be an in-person event but a limited number of sessions of the conference may be hosted online, depending on feasibility. Conference paper presentations are organised around topic streams and there are plans for a number of collaborative events such as workshops, and film and art displays.

Calls for stream and collaborative event proposals are now open. The submission deadline for proposals is 29 July 2022. Once stream topics have been confirmed, the call for papers will open in August 2022. The conference provides the opportunity for Stellenbosch University to become further established as the leading research-intensive university while positioning itself to Africa and the world on issues related to women and marginalised gender identities amongst others.

The GWO2023 organising committee is led by Prof Anita Bosch from Stellenbosch Business School, who is joined by Prof Ameeta Jaga (UCT), Dr Faith Ngunjiri (Kenya), and Prof Nasima Carrim (UP).
