The School of Accountancy at Stellenbosch University received multiple excellence awards at the first-ever edition of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Awards during a virtual ceremony recently.

The CIMA Excellence Awards celebrate outstanding academic partners, tuition providers and students who have made significant contributions to the accounting profession and the Institute over the past year. These awards highlight the high quality of teaching, research, and learning in accounting education across the world.

The School of Accountancy was awarded the CIMA Prize-Winner Excellence Award which recognises university partners with top-performing CIMA students in case study exams. It also received the CIMA Global Excellence Award which recognises university partners that achieved the highest pass rates for CIMA exams.

The School of Accountancy's CIMA programme not only focuses on accounting knowledge, but prepares students for a career in business. It teaches skills for strategic advice, managing risk and making key decisions.

Roelof Baard, senior lecturer and leader of the BComHons (Management Accounting) programme at the School of Accountancy, said they are grateful for the recognition that they received for their CIMA programme that has long been part of the School of Accountancy.

“We are truly honoured to have been awarded multiple CIMA Excellence Awards for 2021. We are proud to be associated with CIMA and look forward in continuing working with the profession in the future," he said.

According to Baard these awards confirm that the School of Accountancy deliver high quality students not just in passing the CIMA exams, but also for the workplace.

Andrew Harding, chief executive of Management Accounting at CIMA, commented: “The CIMA Excellence Awards honour institutions and individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the accounting profession and worked tirelessly to enrich their students, providing them with the best possible education and prepare the next generation of accounting professionals.

“The CIMA Prize-Winner Excellence Award and the CIMA Global Excellence Award received by Stellenbosch University is a true testament of its commitment and dedication to building the future of our profession."

This achievement puts the School of Accountancy on par with other prestigious universities globally that have also received multiple CIMA excellence awards, such as the University of Nottingham, the University of Manchester and the Warsaw School of Economics.

Overall, 71 global and 40 regional country winners of the CIMA Excellence Awards were announced during the ceremony on 11 December 2020.

The CIMA Excellence Awards will be presented annually to those who have made a difference to the global accounting community and proactively supported their students towards earning their Chartered Global Management Accountant designation.

The awards are sponsored by the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants, the global accounting organisation formed by CIMA and the American Institute of CPAs.

CIMA is the world's leading and largest professional body of management accountants. Its members and students operate in 179 countries.
