Hyperspectral cameras used for PhD study to evaluate the quality of maize

Dr Kate Sendin (Department Food Science) used the VNIR and SWIR hyperspectral cameras at the Vibrational Spectroscopy unit for her PhD project to develop methods, which can be used to evaluate the quality of maize.

Maize kernels are graded based on the percentage defects including colour (pinking), insect damage and presence of foreign materials amongst others.  By using hyperspectral imaging to collect spectra of healthy and 'defective' maize, methods can be developed for rapid evaluation of these properties saving time and cost for analysis.
