Auditing lecturer Prof Riaan Rudman of the School of Accountancy recently opened the Finnish National Library Congress in Helsinki, Finland.

Hosted by the Finnish Library Association, the June conference and trade fair – one of the biggest gatherings of librarians in Finland – were attended by 700 library professionals, decision-makers and other interest groups.

According to Prof Rudman, as a chartered accountant he was honoured to be asked to speak at a library conference. “I was one of only two English speaking presenters."

Following the opening remarks by Finnish Member of Parliament Silvia Modig, Prof Rudman delivered his address about the changes in a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world, and the online user experience of libraries.

Other topics included artificial intelligence, big data, and imagining how the library of the future in conjunction with “machines" will look.

While in Helsinki, Prof Rudman also gave a guest lecture to academic researchers at the University of Helsinki on social media risks.
