The Stellenbosch University (SU) Open Day is the ideal opportunity for learners in Grade 11 and 12 to obtain valuable information on study opportunities at higher education institutions.

The Open Day will take place on Saturday, 23 February from 08:30 to 16:00 at the Stellenbosch and Tygerberg campuses.

“The great benefit of an Open Day is that prospective students can talk directly with University staff. In this way, they can obtain the information that they want about the various fields of study and the support services that the University offers," says Magdel Pretorius, project manager at SU's Centre for Student Recruitment and Career Advice.

Visitors can obtain information on, among others, career choices, financial assistance, accommodation, student communities and student life.

A new addition to this year's Open Day is the discourse that will be presented by the Student Access and Student Affairs divisions on the Rooiplein. Interesting topics will be discussed here, including the gap between school and university, tips from current students to matriculants and how to become part of the Maties family.

Moreover, Maties Sport athletes and sport managers will also be available on the Rooiplein to talk to learners interested in high-performance sport.

SU Library Amphitheatre the starting point

Visitors are encouraged to start the day at the welcoming area in the SU Library Amphitheatre (or the 'Bibgat') on the Rooiplein, where complete information on the programme as well as certain general information sessions will be available. These information sessions will cover, among others:

  • financial assistance;
  • the process of choosing a course of study; and
  • student support (including students with special learning needs).
Information officers will also be on duty campus-wide to assist visitors with directions and general enquiries.

Career guidance

The University offers prospective students access to a free questionnaire for career guidance at www.gostudy.net/maties. This questionnaire identifies appropriate fields of study and then links these with various study and career opportunities.

 Magdel Pretorius adds, “Another innovative programme at www.gostudy.net/maties is Course Chooser, which helps prospective students to look for programmes for which they qualify based on their Grade 11 or Grade 12 results. Of course, this will also give them a good indication of whom to talk to at the Open Day."

“SU also offers a personal career counselling service to both Grade 11s and Grade 12s. The service includes a psychometric assessment of personality, aptitude and interests, individual discussions as well as a written report with results and recommendations," says Pretorius.

To make an appointment with one of SU's counselling psychologists, send an e-mail to svs@sun.ac.za or phone 021 808 4709.
