The names of the winners of the recent land art competition, hosted by Stellenbosch University's faculty of AgriSciences, has been announced.

Both winners read details about the competition in Die Burger.

Alta Groenewald from Grabouw took the winning photo of the installation artwork, entitled "The Earth". Strijdom van der Merwe, a prizewinning land artist, made the art work as a commissioned piece for the university. This year the faculty is celebrating its centenary.

This land installation art project consists of two giant circles that have been planted with wheat and canola. Each circle is 100 metres in diameter.

Groenewald won a R1000 gift voucher from the SU Cellar.

Andries van Rooyen from Paarl won a voucher worth R1000 from the Matie Shop. Van Rooyen, who is interested in the artist's work, answered our competition question correctly. The answer was "fire". This is one of the four elements of nature symbolised in the four parts of the art work.

The crop circles were made and planted amid cornfields on the farm Boontjieskraal in the Overberg (next to the N2, in the direction of Riviersonderend from Cape Town). It can be seen from the main road. !
