“Yes we can, yes we have and yes we will." This was the inspiring words of encouragement from Dr Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, Chancellor at Nelson Mandela University, to women at the Women's Celebratory Event organised by Stellenbosch University's Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) on Friday, 24 August 2018.

The faculty invited influential women from Stellenbosch University (SU), and the broader South African society to share their experiences in their journey to success. Among the other keynote guest speakers at the event was Prof Thuli Madonsela, Social Justice Chair at SU, Ms Ntsiki Biyela, Maties alumnus and the first black female wine-maker in South Africa, Ms Pulane Kole, Head: Socio-Economic Impact Assessment Systems, Office of the Presidency and Prof Ingrid Woolard, Dean: Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences.

Organiser of the event, Prof Pregala Pillay, EMS Vice-Dean: Social Impact and Transformation, said she was very pleased with the line-up of speakers at the Women's Day celebration. “Women have taken on many roles in our society and have become ambassadors in different fields to help other women succeed. However, men can also play a significant role in promoting and empowering women in society," she said.

The eminence and role of women in all facets of society have changed. There was a time in history when women was once regarded as the home executive taking care of household chores and the prime parent to care for their children. Today, women have taken on a new dimension by breaking into male-dominated industries, juggling work and family life while occupying executive and professional positions in all sectors and spheres.

The influential women, who shared their journey of success, also shared their wisdom, compassion, resilience, loyalty and passion for humanity, which undoubtedly contributes to a better world.

Stefan Els, Multi-media Coordinator at SU's Corporate Communication Division captured the remarkable speeches from all the influential speakers at the event. Watch them all here below.
