Parliament has congratulated Stellenbosch University (SU) on marking its Centenary this year, “recognising the University's contribution as a national asset and its resolute, steady progress in terms of promoting multilingualism, broadening access, increasing its social impact and advancing transformation".

A motion in this regard was proposed on Thursday, 23 August 2018 by Mr Andricus van der Westhuizen, a Member of Parliament who also served on the SU Council until last month.

Parliament noted that “since its formation out of Victoria College on 2 April 1918 through an Act of Parliament, Stellenbosch University has become a leading higher-education institution that is making a crucial contribution to human development in our country, on our continent and in the rest of the world".

It further noted that “despite celebrating its many successes and achievements the past hundred years, the University acknowledged its contribution towards the injustices of the past, for which it has expressed deep regret, and has taken responsibility towards present and future generations by committing itself unconditionally to the ideal of an inclusive world-class university in and for Africa".

The National Assembly unanimously agreed to the motion.
