The Stellenbosch University (SU) Law Clinic has been shortlisted as a finalist in the category 'Specialist Law Firm of the Year' in the 2018 African Legal Awards. It becomes the first University Law Clinic to be shortlisted for this prestigious award.

The Law Clinic will compete for the award with other top law firms including Allen & Overy, Webber Wentzel, DLA Piper, Bowmans and Spoor & Fisher. Spoor & Fischer won the award in 2017.

The African Legal Awards recognises exceptional achievements, excellence and innovation in the legal profession in Africa.

The event will be hosted by Legal Week  ̶  the organisers of The British Legal Awards  ̶  and the Corporate Counsel Association of South Africa (CCASA. The Awards ceremony will bring legal communities across Africa together on Friday 7 September 2018 at The Wanderers Club in Johannesburg.

“Being shortlisted is a significant achievement for the Law Clinic because legal services is only one component of our business. Yet, the quality of our service offering places us on par with the best law firms in the country", said Dr Theo Broodryk, Head of the SU Law Clinic.

The SU Law Clinic has been involved in significant legal impact matters, such as potentially precedent-setting discrimination litigation and tampon tax proposals, and is recognised as a leader in the various fields in which it operates.

The winner of the Achievement Award, which is chosen by the CCASA, will also be announced at the ceremony on 7 September. Last year, Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng received this award.
