The Vice-Rector Learning and Teaching, Prof Arnold Schoonwinkel, hosted the First-Year Achievement Awards event for the top achieving first-year students of 2017. The event also highlights the role that the lecturer plays in these achievements. The event was held at Lord Neethlingshof wine farm on Wednesday, 11 April 2018. Both Prof Schoonwinkel and Dr Antoinette van der Merwe congratulated the students on their achievements and the lecturers for their dedication to quality teaching. The group of 32 students from across all ten faculties included Extended Degree Programme students who have excelled beyond what their matric results may have indicated.

The evening was graced by the guest-speaker, Educational Psychology Professor Ronelle Carolissen, Vice-dean Teaching and Learning of the Education Faculty. She addressed the students on their social responsibility as citizens in their chosen fields of academia and future careers but also towards the university community to counter social prejudices. Her message iterated that we are all part of a community and that change in our country starts with the individual.

The 90 guests, which included deans and vice-deans from the 10 faculties, enjoyed an evening of conversation and a sit-down 3-course meal. The prestigious event was closed by Dr van der Merwe who thanked everyone present for adding to the success of the evening.
