Africa Day (25 May) celebrates the day when the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), the precursor to the African Union (AU), was formed in 1963. It acknowledges the progress that we, as Africans, have made, while reflecting upon the common challenges we face in a global environment. Stellenbosch University (SU) will celebrate Africa Day with the following events:

  •  This year the Institute of Futures Research (IFR), University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB) and USB Executive Development (USB-ED) are hosting an evening at Gold Opulent African Cuisine in Cape Town, where a selection of speakers will facilitate mini-conversations with small groups of guests. Speakers will share their personal perspective on the future of Africa, given their vast and unique experience. Click here to see the speaker profiles.
  • The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences has planned an Africa Day seminar, entitled "Universities in Africa – an inter-generational dialogue on Decolonisation and Activism". The three sessions that will be hosted throughout the day are entitled "An Intergenerational Dialogue on Experiences of Students and Staff"; "A University in Africa" and "Harnessing the Power of Activism". In celebration of Africa Day, Dr Ethel Phiri (Department of Genetics) and Dr Natasha Mothapo (Department of Botany and Zoology) talk about the need for research collaboration in Africa.
