They are no longer blue, but maroon. From the beginning of this year, these are the new Matie Bikes that form part of the Transport Services fleet. The well-known blue Matie Bikes around campus are now replaced by the newer, upgraded version.

"In 2012 we imported the blue bicycles second-hand from the Netherlands. Although they are still in a good condition, is has now become necessary to modernise," says Roelof Loubser, Mobility Manager. "We put out a tender for the supply of the bicycles. Flandria, the well-known bicycle shop in Stellenbosch, won the tender and we purchased 500 bicycles."

"The new bicycles are built in the same style as the blue bicycles. These ones are without gears, but now fitted with conventional brakes and not back-pedal brakes. The bicycles also display the Matie Bike badge and each one has a number between 1 and 500." The new maroon bicycles are thus replacing all the blue bicycles. The old bicycles will be available for sale as from February. (Contact Transport Services for more information in this regard.)

If you are interested in hiring one of the new bicycles, you will have to act quickly. Transport Services currently hire out about twenty bicycles per day at a rate of R2 500 per year, of which R1 500 is a refundable deposit.
