Make the most of this opportunity and dedicate yourself to becoming the kind of teacher and citizen that will make a difference in South Africa.

With this message Prof Maureen Robinson, Dean of the Faculty of Education, welcomed the first-year Education students of 2017. At an introduction session held on Friday, she gave some background on the faculty and the staff that the students will deal with.

"The BEd programme is a very full programme," she warned. "I hope you are full of energy and ready to work hard."

"You are a small group of privileged people. We received more than 800 applications for this course and we only have space for 250 students.

"I'm asking you on bended knee not to waste this opportunity. Work hard, have fun and remember how lucky you are to be here."

She explained to the students that the Faculty of Education encourages students to ask questions, think about society and engage with issues.

"We want you to become a well-rounded person. You still have many years to go as a teacher in and a citizen of this country and you will be able to make a huge difference.

"There is such inequality, so regardless of where you teach you will have to be a good teacher. My message to you today is: Just be a good teacher for South Africa, no matter where you are."
