Students who attended SciMathUS (Science and Mathematics at Stellenbosch University's) in 2016 performed well again in NSC examination.

Stellenbosch University's Centre for Pedagogy (SUNCEP) offers students from educationally disadvantaged circumstances a second chance to qualify for higher education.

In this year-long program, students have the opportunity to improve their NSC marks in Mathematics and Physical Sciences. They can also choose to do Accounting and Introduction to Economics. These courses are offered by the university.

2015 and 2016 matriculants who do not meet the admission requirements for higher education, and have passed Grade 12 with an average of 60% and have obtained at least 45% in Mathematics and Physical Sciences, may now apply for admission to this program. The closing date for applications is 20 January 2017.

Students are advised to apply online at www.sun.ac.za/suncep or call us at 021 808 2301 or 3032.

In SciMathUS, students have class every of the week from 08:00 to 16:30. "In addition to the academic tuition, they also take a module in Academic Literacy. This includes a course in computer skills, the opportunity to learn what it means to work independently and manage one's time, "said Mrs Nokwanda Siyengo, Program Manager of SciMathUS.

Success!

The 2016 group boasts nine distinctions in Mathematics and 15 in Physical Sciences. The average in these two subjects has improved by 16 and 17 percentage points respectively. The top achiever in Mathematics scored 89% while the top performer in Physical Sciences obtained 87%.

In this group, 87% obtained more than 60% in Mathematics - the minimum entry requirement for most degree programmes at a university. These students may now apply at any tertiary institution in South Africa. Most of them have already chosen Stellenbosch University. In Physical Sciences 92% of the group achieved more than 60%.

"Success is within reach of everyone who is willing to work hard," said Dr. Trevor van Louw, director of SUNCEP. "At the end of 2016, 39 former SciMathUS students graduated from this university. Nine of them have obtained postgraduate qualifications - one a master's degree! Two former students already boast doctorates and there are more of them on the way! "
