The Faculty of Education at Stellenbosch University (SU) recently hosted an MEd orientation day to familiarise new Master's students with the intellectual foundations of the MEd journey.

Students from as far as Zimbabwe, Namibia, the Free State, Eastern Cape and Gauteng, as well as students from all over the Western Cape attended the session.

They will be studying in the Departments of Curriculum Studies and Education Policy Studies.

According to Prof Aslam Fataar, Vice-Dean: Research in the Faculty of Eduction, the session provided students with an overview of their Master's journey in 2017.

"It explained the necessity of developing research capacity for the research aspect of their study and the students were introduced to the support processes and resources offered by the Faculty and University."

The core focus of the orientation session revolved around developing proposals, indicating a number of processes that students will be involved in over the next ten months. The students also met their supervisors to establish the basis for a productive relationship.

"Attending students expressed their exhilaration at being exposed to the rudiments and expectations of the course and while some felt a bit overawed by the ensuing learning process, they were very excited to participate in an invigorating process towards their capacitation to do research at this level," added Prof Fataar.

The students will do research on various aspects that currently characterise the education system in South Africa.
