A total of 522 students in the Faculty of Education graduated from Stellenbosch University this week.

This number includes 199 BEd degrees, 164 Postgraduate Certificates in Education, 131 Honours degrees and 17 Master's degrees. Eleven students graduated with PhDs.

Among the graduates were Juline Rossouw, Proteas netball player, who graduated with a BEd degree and Kerryn Pedersen, a visually-impaired student who earned her BEd Honours degree in Educational Support cum laude (with distinction).

At the graduation ceremony on Tuseday, a Chancellor's award was bestowed on Prof Eli Bitzer, director of the Centre for Higher and Adult Education.

Prof Bitzer contributed over many decades to capacity building in the higher education community, quality assurance of higher education programmes, and the scholarship of higher education.

He established himself as a leader in the tertiary sector in, inter alia, the South African Association for Research and Development in Higher Education (SAARDHE) and the South African Association for Academic Development (SAAAD). As part of various evaluation and accreditation teams, he has helped develop and preserve standards for higher education.

This dedicated supervisor and examiner has produced over 100 publication outputs; he has received the SAARDHE's Johann Pauw memorial award and has been named one of the University's 50 most productive authors by the Vice-Rector: Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Studies.

Prof Bitzer will retire at the end of the year.
