As part of its 60th-anniversary celebrations, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is introducing 60 future healthcare professionals who are currently in their first year. Meet Kauthar Ghansar.

“You’ll never know unless you try.” This is the motto that first-year Mb,ChB student Kauthar Ghansar lives by.

For many students studying medicine is a lifelong dream come true, but for Ghansar it was about trusting her intuition. “I felt very strongly about the course and decided to follow my feeling.”

Her aim is to one day be a gynaecologist, but also a loving wife to the man of her dreams. “I also won’t forget my parents, who are the reason I am here today. I would be taking care of them in their elderly years.” She says her family is her main motivation for persisting with her hard work.

Ghansar, who hails from the Cape Town suburb of Rylands, achieved seven distinctions in matric and received a recruitment bursary from the Stellenbosch University.

She says as an introvert, she had to overcome personal challenges because of all the new people around her. “I felt uncomfortable at first, but as time went by, I started feeling at home. The staff and students are very welcoming.

“The workload, on the other hand, seemed to be a lot more compared to high school, but it was manageable.”

She tries to stay on top of her work by reading her notes before lectures, paying attention and class and revising after lectures.

“This saves a lot of time when gets closer to an exam or test.”
