Steinhoff Helderberg claimed their first Steinhoff Sauer Cup title since 2000 when they beat Steinhoff Huis Marais 21-15 on Friday, 23 September.

An early try by Helderberg tighthead Gawie Gregory and conversion by flyhalf Henri du Toit gave Helderberg a 7-0 lead. The men from the Republic went further ahead when scrumhalf Johan Lamprechts score a breakaway try which Du Toit also converted.

Huis Marais struck back with a try by winger Edward Reynierse to make the halftime score 14-5.

The Huis Marais manne edged even closer when lock Jaco Louw scored with scrumhalf Visser Geldenhuys converting. At 14-12 the game was in the balance and it would come down to some individual brilliance to decide the outcome.

Helderberg's veteran center Manus Bester sliced through the Huis Marais defense and the conversion by Du Toit made the score 21-12 with time running out. Despite a late penalty by Geldenhuys Huis Marais could not score another try.

Helderberg will now represent Stellenbosch University in the Steinhoff Koshuis Rugby Championship in 2017.
