The Matie Choir will feature in the semi-final of the Varsity Sing competition (KykNet, Channel 144) on Thursday 29 September and Thursday 6 October at 20:30.

Varsity Sing is a nationwide competition where South-African universities' choirs will battle it out for the top prize, culminating in the finale on 13 October. After the episode on 6 October, the audience can vote for their favourite choir. The only way to vote is via the Varsity Sports App:

Between 6 October and 13 October, each App can vote once a day for its favourite choir.

There is a cash prize on the line, which conducter André van der Merwe says could be "used to support choir members with financial needs".

"Music is one of those special forms of human expression that has the ability to cross barriers and unite people," Prof Wim de Villiers, Rector and Vice-chancellor at SU, has said with reference to the choir's achievements. "In these troubled times, we need to come together – worldwide, in our own country and also at universities, and this choir is helping us do exactly that. Now, let's hold thumbs for the Choir for the rest of the 'Varsity Sing' competition."
