As part of its 60th anniversary celebrations, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is introducing 60 future healthcare professionals who are currently in their first year. Meet Joshua Farmer.

“Don’t forget that we are endlessly spiralling through and infinite abyss, and that death comes to us all. So try to do everything you want."

This is the message 19-year old Joshua Farmer would like to give his 40-year old self. It’s no wonder that the house committee members at Hippokrates describe him as a poet that manages to touch the coldest of hearts.

In addition to writing poetry, Farmer, a first year MB,ChB student at Stellenbosch University (SU), also enjoys skateboarding, hockey and surfing. His stellar academic record (he matriculated with seven distinctions) also helped him to secure both a recruitment bursary and a merit bursary.

He describes his mother, who completed her masters degree at SU in Intercultural Communication, as the most successful person he knows. "She managed to escape a seemingly inescapable background to achieve her dreams. She also continues to further her education and self-development, as well as that of the people around her."

His own dream is to do something that also changes people’s lives for the better. "I see myself travelling through areas with limited access to healthcare and delivering it to people there. I would also write about my experiences, heartbreaks and successes."

Messages he would like to give to…
  • Adults: “It’s possible to support the dreams, ideas and futures of young people without compromising your own."
  • Teens: "Your are the best person you can be right now, and you’re only going to get better."
  • Campus: "Be constantly and unapologetically under construction."
