Today (29 April 2016) exactly one year ago, Prof Wim de Villiers was inaugurated as Rector and Vice-Chancellor of Stellenbosch University (SU).
"It has certainly been an eventful period, but I would not have had it any other way," he says a new video in which he looks back on his first 12 months in office.
"SU is an excellent institution doing great work, and I am honoured to be associated with it. All credit to our staff and students – and other members of the extended Matie family."
Among the highlights Prof De Villiers talks about are the record number of qualifications awarded by the University in 2015, including 266 doctoral degrees, and the fact that SU has yet again been identified as the university with the highest per capita research output in the country.
"But that is not to say all is well and we have no problems. Yes, Stellenbosch University is facing challenges – complex and demanding ones. But I think we are making good progress."
