Recently, members of the Stellenbosch University Institute for Plant Biotechnology (IPB) set out for Jonkershoek to spend the morning at the Akkerland crèche as part of the IPB community outreach programme. The outreach day was organised by IPB staff member Pauliane Davidse. Staff and students spent a fun day entertaining the little ones drinking make-believe tea out of plastic cups and supervising activities on the jungle gym. The children all had the opportunity to paint their own T-shirt, of course with lots of help from desperate adults trying to prevent paint being splashed all over everything and everybody! A long queue also formed for little faces to be painted and requests ranged from Spider-Man and Batman to Tigger and Mini Mouse faces. Exhausted by all the action, the hotdogs, cake, fruit, sweets and drinks were a welcome addition to the morning. Staff and students left the crèche satisfied with the small yet positive contribution they were able to make to the well-being of the Jonkershoek children. A special thanks to crèche teacher Ms Celeste Adams for receiving us with open arms and encouraging the children to enjoy this special treat.
