The Vice Rector (Learning and Teaching) invites you to an interesting discussion around teaching and learning at the University on 27 August 2014.
Prof Razeen Davids (Head: Division of Nephrology) from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences will be the guest speaker at this seminar entitled "Development and usability evaluation of a multimedia e-learning resource for electrolyte and acid-base disorders".
Prof Davids' experience as a nephrologist spans over twenty years. Over the years he has acquired a keen interest in e-learning – especially how to design e-learning to maximize learning – and his PhD research is also focused on this topic.
Often the educational impact of e-learning is disappointing, with high drop-out rates from online courses, etc. This is despite lots of resources being spent on developing materials/programs. One under-appreciated aspect is that of usability, and the need to evaluate and optimise usability so that poor usability of the technology interface is not a barrier to learning. Using a theoretical framework based on usability engineering and cognitive load theory, Prof Davids' research illustrates this and proposes that the development of e-learning materials or programs includes the routine evaluation of usability.
