The presentation is a critical discussion of Visual Redress at Stellenbosch University as an example of what we will scribe as  ‘institutional transformation’.  It will feature a consideration of a range of institutional actors from across Stellenbosch University (SU) who have been doing generative work in the area of visual redress. VR refers to processes involving changes in the university's visual culture that promote restitution, inclusivity, and institutional cohesion. It relates to the activity undertaken to change the university’s symbols, names, statues, and institutional spaces. It also refers to developing new visual symbols and icons representing the zeitgeist of democratic change on the university’s campuses. The shift is from a discourse of racial exclusion towards a discourse that signifies the university’s symbolic commitment to redress, restitution and inclusion. What has been emerging during the visual redress project is a praxis that emphasises inclusive, participative dialogue as key to producing the visual redress activities and outcomes. The presentation will end with a discussion of the normative and praxis-related terms of the next phase of visual redress aimed at deepening the university’s transformation commitments.
