In 2020 the SharkSafe BarrierTM , a Stellenbosch University spin-off technology company, received the NSTF Lewis Foundation Green Economy Award for inventing the first eco-friendly shark-specific barrier technology. This is the first time in nearly 90 years that a new technology has been developed to replace the deadly shark nets and drum lines in place along so many beaches of the world.

The SharkSafe BarrierTM has the potential to drastically alter the current relationship between humans and one of the top predators of the oceans. In celebration of World Tourism month, well-known environmental writer and impact investment specialist Lynton Burger will talk to experts about recent research and innovation efforts to support the local shark eco-tourism industry and conserve our oceans.

The panel members are:

  • Dr Sara Andreotti – marine biologist and postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Botany and Zoology at Stellenbosch University, and co-founder and manager of SharkSafeTM
  • Walter Bernadis – African Watersport Diving Denter, Unkomaas
  • Mike Nortje – Pisces Divers, Simon's Town
  • Alexis Grosskopf, co-founder of OceanHub Africa, a platform assisting entrepreneurs to explore the commercial viability of an ocean-minded economy.

The webinar is hosted by Stellenbosch University International and OceanHub Africa.
