In early 2020, the Drama Department of Stellenbosch University commissioned acclaimed young theatre director, Jefferson Tshabalala, to develop a new play with the students of the department. Soon after rehearsals began, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, halting the creative process. Now, the Drama Department, in collaboration with the director and cast, presents an online event where this interrupted process can be interrogated and concluded. In this hybrid intermedial performance and panel discussion with the director, cast, and crew, we reflect on the process, challenges, and opportunities of creating a play (often called 'devising'). The cast will present extracts from the unfinished play (Die Swart Gevaar), inviting discussions and debate on the themes explored in the play, which includes timely conversations on race, xenophobia, oppressive social hierarchies and structures, othering, Land, heritage, ancestry, family, and loyalty. Finally, we will discuss the methods and approaches commonly used in theatre devising, and how these methods were applied in the creation process of this (unfinished) production.
