Wildlife and Conservation in Sustainable Economic Development

The UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals aims to connect the dots between numerous economic, environmental, and social international policies. These include processes and strategies addressing the conservation of wildlife, such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora, the World Conservation Strategy, and the Convention on Biological Diversity. How are the concepts of wildlife and conservation understood in these processes and strategies? How do they relate to sustainable economic development? What are the implications for the emerging African concept of a wildlife economy?

Prof Francis Vorhies is the founding director of the African Wildlife Economy Institute at Stellenbosch University and the Academic Director of the School of Wildlife Conservation at the African Leadership University. He is also the executive director of Earthmind, a professional association focused on the nexus between conservation and business. Previously, he was chief executive of the Earthwatch Institute in the UK, chief economist of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in Switzerland, resource economist for the African Wildlife Foundation in Kenya, and a founder of Eco Plus in South Africa advising the conservation industry on economic policy and business strategy. Prof Vorhies has a PhD in Economics from the University of Colorado and a Diploma in Integrated Environmental Management from the University of Cape Town. He is a member of IUCN Commission specialist groups on sustainable use, conservation finance, and business.
