A symposium with the theme 'Restructuring Science and Research at Stellenbosch University on the basis of justice, inclusion and ethical integrity' will be held at Stellenbosch University (SU) next week.

Members of the campus community are invited to attend the symposium scheduled for Tuesday, 21 May 2019 from 09:00 to 13:10 in the Stellenbosch University Library Auditorium in Stellenbosch.

The programme will commence with an introduction and stating the objectives of the symposium, followed by the first panel discussion, entitled 'Race and the Politics of Knowledge at Stellenbosch University', which will run from 09:15 to 10:45. The panellists will be Profs Jonathan Jansen (Education Policy Studies, SU), Amanda Gouws (Political Science, SU), Steven Robins (Social Anthropology, SU) and Barbara Boswell (Department of English, UCT).

The second panel discussion will run from 11:05 to 12:50 and is entitled 'Research, Science and Ethics at Stellenbosch University'. The panellists will be Prof Gubela Mji (Centre for Rehabilitation Studies, SU), Ms Melany Hendricks (Psychiatry, SU), Prof Nadine Bowers-Du Toit (Religion and Development Research, SU), Emeritus Professor Anita van der Merwe (Nursing) and Prof Usuf Chikte (panel moderator – Global Health, SU).

The programme will conclude with a discussion of resolutions from 12:50 to 13:10.

Seating in the auditorium is limited and therefore confirmation of attendance via email to Ms Simone Alexander at salex@sun.ac.za is essential.

The invitation to the symposium was issued by Profs Aslam Fataar, Amanda Gouws and Usuf Chikte in their capacity as Senate members serving on the Stellenbosch University Council, and other concerned members of Senate.
