Vriendelike groete

Dear Colleagues and Students

I have the privilege to share good news with our campus community so early in the year. It gives me great pleasure to announce that Stellenbosch University has been awarded another six Research Chairs under the South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) of the National Research Foundation (NRF).

Stellenbosch University was awarded the following Research Chairs:

  • Mycobactomics (genetic study of Tuberculosis-causing bacteria)
  • Meat Science: Genomics to Nutrinomics (co-hosted with the University of Fort Hare)
  • Biomarkers for Tuberculosis
  • Mathematical and Theoretical Physical Biosciences (joint proposal with the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences)
  • Integrated Wine Sciences
  • Animal Tuberculosis

This brings Stellenbosch University's number of SARChI Research Chairs to 17. In addition, a joint Chair has been awarded to the University of Venda and the Centre for Invasion Biology (C•I•B), an inter-institutional NRF Centre of Excellence based at Stellenbosch University. Through the latest SARChI awards existing research collaborations with the universities of Fort Hare and Venda, as well as the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences are strengthened.

I would like to congratulate all academic and support staff involved in the successful applications. The NRF received a total of 406 applications from 22 universities. After a rigorous and competitive selection process 60 Research Chairs were awarded in 2012.

The South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) is a flagship initiative of Government designed to attract and retain excellence in research and innovation in the South African science system. This allocation recognises our excellent research and innovation outputs and affirms Stellenbosch University's position as one of Africa's top research institutions.

I would like to acknowledge the invaluable contribution of our researchers and post-graduate students to ensure our consistent performance in high quality scientific outputs. I wish you well for the next evaluation and approval phase of the process.

Kind regards
