Titel/Title : Net zero logistics: a review of the carbon mitigation and sequestration options
Tyd/Time : 13:00 – 14:00, Tuesday 18th of April 2023
Plek/Location : MS Teams and VDS 3022
Opsomming /Abstract:
Logistical activities account for around 11-12% of energy-related CO2
emissions worldwide. Many businesses have now committed to get these
emissions down to ‘net zero’ by 2050 or earlier. This will be very
difficult to achieve, given the predicted growth of freight transport
and its almost total dependence on fossil fuel. The presentation will
outline a framework that businesses or governments can use when
developing a decarbonisation strategy for logistics operations. It will
then examine five categories of carbon mitigation measure: reducing the
demand for freight movement, shifting freight to lower carbon transport
modes, improving vehicle utilisation, raising energy efficiency and
switching logistics to low-carbon renewable energy. To reach net zero,
mitigation will need to be supplemented by significant sequestration of
greenhouse gases already in the atmosphere. The talk will consider the
implications for logistics of organising carbon dioxide removal and
storage at a planetary scale. It will end by differentiating logistical
activities in terms of their likelihood of becoming carbon neutral or
carbon negative over the next few decades.
