Title:  Vehicle speeding reduction in South Africa: A voluntary travel behaviour change experiment

Abstract: Since the invention of the motor vehicle over a century ago, it is estimated that about 30 million people have been killed in road crashes worldwide. The speed of motor vehicles is at the core of the estimated 1.2 million people that are killed and the 50 million that are injured in road crashes worldwide each year. A report issued by the World Health Organisation in 2010 shows that South Africa has one of the world's poorest road safety records – ±31.9 fatalities/100 000 people, whilst, globally, the average is ±18 fatalities/100 000 people. In South Africa, approximately 1 million road accidents are reported per year. A proof-of-concept study investigates how road user's travel behaviour in terms of vehicle speeding can be reduced through GPS-enables vehicle tracking devices and daily infographics on road usage.
