Genetika, genomika en biobankdienste is hoogs betwiste onderwerpe op die vasteland van Afrika. Gevolglik het sommige van ons doktorale studente besluit om hul navorsing te fokus op die etiese, regs- en sosiale kwessies wat inherent is aan hierdie wetenskaplike vakgebiede.
Te midde van die huidige pandemie is die belangrikheid van genomika-navorsing asook die versameling van biologiese monsters vir diagnose en navorsing sterk in die kollig.

Associate Prof Shenuka Singh: Biobanking during COVID-19 in South Africa
Shenuka is an Associate Professor in the Discipline of Dentistry at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). She has a doctoral degree in
Dental Public Health. Currently, she is registered for a second PhD
(Clinical and Health Research Ethics) in the Centre for Medical Ethics
and Law at Stellenbosch University, after completing a Postgraduate
Diploma in Health Research Ethics on the ARESA program. Shenuka has
served on the National Health Research Ethics Council (NHREC) and the
CSIR REC. She is currently serving as a Deputy Chair for the Biomedical
Research Ethics Committee at UKZN.
Francis Masiye: Informed Consent for Genetic Research in Malawi: Preliminary Findings
Francis
is a graduate in Philosophy (Pontifical Urbaniana University). He
completed a Masters degree in Medical Anthropology (University of
Malawi) followed by a Masters in Bioethics (University of Cape Town).
Francis subsequently attended training in the International Research
Ethics Institute (Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health). He
has also attended post-graduate training in Clinical Ethics and Clinical
Trial Monitoring. He is currently a PhD candidate in Clinical and
Research Ethics in the Centre for Medical Ethics and Law at Stellenbosch
University and is working in the Directorate of Research, Postgraduate
Studies and Outreach at the Malawi University of Science and Technology
(MUST).
Associate Prof Joseph Ochieng: Return of Results of Genomics Research in Uganda
Joseph
is a medical doctor with bioethics expertise. He is an Associate
Professor and former chair of the department of Anatomy at Makerere
University. He has developed and implemented bioethics related training
curricula for Masters, undergraduate and short course training programs.
Dr. Ochieng has served as a member on three IRBs over a period of 17
years and conducted research resulting in several publications. He has
served as a consultant on a number of related research activities and
contributed to development and implementation of national research
ethics guidelines for human and animal research and national guidelines
for biobanking in Uganda.
