(Including Conclusions and

Implications for Teaching and Learning at SU)

In an information-rich world, the emphasis in higher education is shifting from a traditional content-delivery model to one that values active learning. The change in fee structure has led to shifts in expectations: students demand more than simply receiving information they can locate online. Thus, 'creativity' has become one of the most sought-after attributes by employers, yet educators in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine) have often found it difficult to move away from traditional lecture and tutorial formats. By incorporating playful elements into the curriculum, I have sought to create effective active-learning environments which encourage engagement as well as providing opportunities for fun and promoting interaction. I will give examples of how I have used playful design to cultivate creativity, develop transferable skills, and enhance resilience amongst students.

Key Words: Active learning, student engagement, creativity
